Why Heirloom Clothing Feels So Special (Even to Toddlers)?
May 18, 2025
You know how there’s always that one thing your child wants to wear again and again? A favorite sweater. A little dress with just the right feel. Something about it makes them light up, even if they can’t explain why.
I’ve seen it so many times with the hand-knit pieces I make. Not because they’re trendy or flashy, but because they feel good. And kids notice that — probably more than we realize :-)
Soft, natural materials make all the difference
If it doesn’t feel good, kids won’t wear it. That’s why I use only breathable cotton and bamboo yarns in all my heirloom knits. They’re gentle on sensitive skin, and get even softer with time.
One mom shared this, and it stuck with me:
"We have the Rainbow Dress, the Lucy dress (it has pockets!) and the Henley Suspender pants and love them all. They are super soft so my kids will wear them again and again… and they are durable too for everyday wear.”
– Heather Goodfellow
That’s exactly what I hope for — handmade children’s clothes that are soft enough for picky little ones and strong enough for daily wear.
Durable enough to hand down
When I talk about “heirloom clothing,” I don’t just mean it looks pretty in a keepsake box. I mean it lasts. Through real play. Through growth spurts. Through multiple kids, years apart.
A longtime customer wrote:
“We've been wearing JuneBee Baby knits since my children were newborns. Her quality is second to none… and each piece will be kept for their children many years from now.”
– Megan Tribuno
That’s what slow fashion is about. Fewer, better pieces that hold memories and still hold their shape.
Kids connect with the small details
Sometimes it’s something as simple as a scalloped edge or the way a piece drapes.
When I’m designing, I think about how it will feel in their hands, how it moves with them, how it looks when they twirl. Those little touches matter more than we think.
This note said it all:
“My daughter loves her Taylor Cardi! It’s light, cozy, and the scalloped edges are the sweetest touch. The vintage-style lace is beautiful, the colors are stunning, and like all JuneBee Baby pieces, it’s hand knitted with care.”
– Kim Maurice
That’s what makes a piece their favorite — it’s not loud, just right.
Year-round wear means fewer, better clothes
I design most of my knitwear to work through every season — because that’s what I’d want, too. Layer it over a tee in spring, under a sweater in fall, wear it by itself in summer. If it doesn’t get worn year-round, it’s not really earning its place in the drawer.
One mom wrote:
“The Monroe cropped vest was well-designed with buttons on the back at the neck and room to grow (those sides are adjustable). I also love that it can be worn in every season. Layer it over long sleeves, short sleeves, or by itself.”
– Jymie Ripka
That kind of flexibility is what makes a piece not just cute, but useful. That’s the core of sustainable baby clothes: clothes that grow with your child and work hard for your family.
